GMC Anantnag Performs First Late-Night Temporary Pacemaker Implantation, Saving Critical Patient's Life
Anantnag Sep 16 : (ANR) In a landmark achievement at Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag, a critically ill patient referred from Kulgam in the middle of the night—intubated and suspected to be in post-status epilepticus—was successfully resuscitated and stabilized by a joint medical team. This marked the first time a lifesaving procedure of this nature was conducted during the night at GMC Anantnag.
The patient arrived in a critical state, suffering from a complete heart block, no recordable pulse, and labored breathing. Under the leadership of Cardiologist Dr. Showkat H Shah, Neurologist Dr. Sheikh Nawaz, and Senior Resident Dr. Riyaz, the medical team acted swiftly. The patient was admitted to the ICU, where immediate resuscitation efforts were initiated by the anaesthesia team.
Due to the patient’s deteriorating condition, it was decided to transfer the patient to the surgical theatre using an Ambu bag. There, in the middle of the night, the team successfully implanted a temporary pacemaker lead, stabilizing the patient’s heart rhythm. This complex, high-risk procedure, conducted with the support of the surgical OT staff, including Mr. Iqbal and Mr. Amin, as well as the anaesthetic team of Senior Residents, Dr Asif and residents, was executed seamlessly, ensuring the patient's survival.
Prof. (Dr.) Mushtaq Ahmad Lone, Head of the Department of General Medicine expressed his heartfelt gratitude and extended congratulations to the collaborative efforts of the Medicine, Anaesthesia, and Surgical teams for their swift and coordinated actions, which led to the successful outcome of this midnight procedure.
Principal GMC Anantnag, Prof. (Dr.) Rukhsana Najeeb, also congratulated the entire team for their life-saving work, emphasizing the significance of such procedures in the region. She further noted that the upcoming installation of the Cath lab at GMC Anantnag will pave the way for saving many more lives, serving as a vital resource for the general public who, until now, had to travel to Srinagar for similar interventions.
The family members of the patient extended gratitude to the medical team for saving the life of their young patient. (ANR)
